Executive Summary

Interviewing Successful Hotel Managers is a structured field study of the practising general manager. Dr Lily Lin conducts long-form, disciplined interviews with senior hoteliers from major international properties and preserves their testimony with editorial restraint. The result is an enduring primary-source portrait of the general manager's craft as it is actually practised: the standing habits, the ordered attention, the leadership philosophies and the daily judgements through which great houses are led.

II · Why This Work Matters

Why This Work Matters

The profession advances not merely through theory, but through the accumulated judgement of those who have practised it. Books of this kind preserve that judgement for the next generation.

This work demonstrates the value of learning directly from experienced hotel leaders. Rather than presenting hospitality theory alone, it captures the practical judgement, leadership philosophies and lived experiences of successful hotel managers from around the world.

III · Founder's Editorial Note

This publication occupies a special place within the history of Luxury Hotel Brokers. During the Institution's formative years, one of its founders encountered this book while travelling aboard a five-star cruise ship. The conversations recorded within its pages profoundly influenced his understanding of hospitality as a profession rooted in leadership, stewardship and lifelong learning.

Its inclusion as Library Record No.001 reflects that lasting influence and the Institution's commitment to preserving works that shape professional understanding rather than merely commercial success. It is included not because it was widely marketed, but because it changed the way at least one attentive reader came to understand what it means to run a great hotel — and, in doing so, contributed to the intellectual foundations of the Institution itself.

IV · Editorial Review

Editorial Review

Dr Lin's method is disciplined and self-effacing: she allows successful managers to speak plainly in their own voices and refuses to overwrite their testimony with theory. The value of this work lies as much in that restraint as in the content of the interviews themselves. Read carefully, the book preserves a form of vernacular wisdom that seldom survives translation into textbook prose — the small judgements, standing habits and daily disciplines through which a general manager actually leads a hotel.

V · Institutional Commentary

Institutional Commentary

This work is admitted as LHB-LIB-000001 in recognition of the profound influence it exerted on one of the Institution's founders. Its inaugural place within the Library reflects the Institution's view that the practitioner voice is a primary source for the discipline — and that a great profession is built as much from the accumulated testimony of those who have practised it as from the systems by which it is taught.

VI · Institutional Essay

On the enduring significance of Interviewing Successful Hotel Managers.

Every profession worthy of the name maintains a record of its practitioners' voices. Medicine has its case notes; law has its judgements; hospitality, until relatively recently, had almost nothing. The general manager's craft — a discipline of ordered attention, personal presence and standing habit — has historically been transmitted from one generation to the next in fragments: an apprenticeship remark, a corridor conversation, a habit observed but never named.

Dr Lin's contribution is to have treated that transmission itself as scholarship. By interviewing successful hotel managers with patience and structure, and by refusing to romanticise or over-theorise their testimony, she has preserved a form of professional knowledge that would otherwise have been lost with the retirement of each generation. The interviews are not celebrity portraits. They are, in the truest sense, primary sources.

The Institution admits this work as its inaugural Library Record because it exemplifies a principle at the centre of the Library's Charter: that the discipline advances by preserving the practitioner voice with the same seriousness as the peer-reviewed article or the operating manual. Every general manager whose testimony survives here contributes to a collective institutional memory of what excellence, in this profession, actually looks like from the inside.

For the aspiring hotelier, the book is a primer in judgement rather than in technique. For the educator, it is a corpus. For the Institution, it is a permanent reminder that the discipline is carried by people, and that the preservation of their testimony is a scholarly responsibility of the first order.

VII · About the Author

Dr Lily Lin

Dr Lily Lin is a hospitality writer, educator and researcher whose long-running interview practice has documented the working lives of senior hoteliers across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Trained through doctoral study in the field and published widely in the professional hospitality press, she has spent the greater part of her career recording the testimony of practising general managers with a discipline seldom applied to the profession.

Her editorial voice is characteristically restrained. Where lesser interviewers overwrite their subjects, Dr Lin allows successful hoteliers to speak plainly, in their own registers, about the standards, disciplines and philosophies through which they lead. That restraint is itself a scholarly contribution: it preserves the practitioner voice in a form that theory cannot supply and that the industry has too rarely thought to keep.

XI · Influence

Why the Institution has preserved this publication — its place within the profession rather than reader reception.

Historical significance. The book stands among the earliest sustained attempts to treat the testimony of practising hotel general managers as scholarship in its own right. It sits within a small body of works that took the practitioner voice seriously at a moment in which the profession was still largely documented through manuals of technique or promotional biography.

Contribution to hospitality. By preserving the standing habits, ordered attention and daily disciplines of successful managers, the work supplies the profession with a form of vernacular evidence that operating manuals cannot furnish. It has become a quiet reference for those concerned with how, in practice, a great house is led.

Educational influence. The interviews have been used in hotel schools and in-house development programmes as a corpus for the discussion of leadership judgement. They are particularly valued in settings where the aim is to teach practical wisdom rather than technique.

Institutional significance. The work informed the intellectual formation of one of the Institution's founders and, through that formation, contributed to the founding disposition of Luxury Hotel Brokers itself. Its admission as Library Record No.001 records that influence within the permanent memory of the Institution.

Long-term relevance. Because the material is testimony rather than technique, the work does not date in the way that operating literature typically does. The specific properties change; the judgement recorded within these pages does not.

Curator's Reflection

This work is preserved because it captures something the discipline has otherwise found difficult to record: the judgement, standing habits and lived experience of those who have led great hotels well. Manuals of technique are numerous; sustained, disciplined testimony from the general managers themselves is rare. Dr Lin's contribution is to have gathered that testimony patiently, refused to overwrite it with theory, and preserved it in a form that a serious reader may still learn from decades after the interviews were conducted. The Institution admits this work as its inaugural Library Record because the discipline is carried by people, and because the responsibility of the Library is precisely to preserve what would otherwise be lost with each retiring generation of practitioners. Read attentively, the book is a primer in judgement rather than in technique — the kind of primer that is easily overlooked in a market for hospitality literature dominated by systems and celebrity. It is preserved here as evidence of what the profession, at its best, has already understood about itself.
